ionization: The process by which an
atom loses or gains an electron,
thereby becoming electrically charged
or ionized. If the ionized atom
captures a free electron that possesses
more energy than the lost electron,
the excess energy is radiated as light.
A singly ionized atom is missing
one electron; a doubly ionized atom
has lost two electrons.
